My eyelids snapped open as I was awakened in the middle of the night by a rumbling on the roof. I turned to the left to see if my younger sister had also heard the noise, but she was still fast asleep. The house was so still, but something was different. I looked out my window and there was an unusual shadow being cast along the diagonal of my backyard in Nashville, TN. This shadow was being cast by a strange tree right next to our creek. This tree hadn’t been there earlier that day, or any other day. In fact, the roots were exposed and reached into the bubbling water of that creek. Being only eight years old, my curiosity was a fire that had to be extinguished. I needed to get closer…
