PINCH

As the wind carried laughter from a child in the distance into Chûndra’s ears, she turns her head. Before she smiles, she feels a pinch in the pit of her stomach. Under her breath, she chastises her conscience, “How could you feel guilty when you’re helping them? I have to start here. It has to be this town. Whatever pain they feel, I will make sure it will only be temporary. They will forget. The children won’t ever know that the world was ever different.”
